The Enchanting World of Shirley Hughes
3 August – 3 September
SPECIAL EVENT: Tea with Shirley Hughes and Clara Vulliamy
Saturday 13 August - 3pm onwards.
Featuring pre-publication copies of the new book Alfie and his Very Best Friend.
Over the past fifty years Shirley Hughes has enchanted, delighted and fascinated readers both young and old. The children that grew up with her wonderful books are now parents themselves - teaching and guiding their own families with the same stories that they loved so much as children.
Our summer exhibition for Shirley Hughes is a warm and heart-felt accolade – not only for one of the greatest writers and illustrators of our generation, a fine ambassador to the world for British books, literature and way of life but also for a compassionate and sensitive mother, who cares greatly about the world in which she has lived both as child and adult.
Surrounded by a close-knit family she draws inspiration from their happiness and success as well as their trials and tribulations - the every-day triumphs and the quantum losses we all feel daily. It is this insight, perception and good humour that makes Shirley loved, and appreciated by all.

Graphic novels are an exciting area of the ever-expanding illustration domain. With a rich historical province in both Asia and continental Europe this tradition is now become fast a growing and exciting area of publishing in Britain, with many leading artist turning their talents and attention to his often wordless medium. Appealing to all ages these stories and the images depicted therein are often challenging and controversial in their themes – but also thought-provoking.

Alexis will be on hand here at the gallery on Wednesday 20 July between 6-8pm to speak about his knowledge and interest in Graphic Novels and give a gallery tour of the work we have on exhibition.
